Tone

This, of course, is a very subjective area, but generally speaking, the more circuitry your signal must traverse, the more it degrades. As they add more and more tone-shaping (or tone-mangling, depending on your perspective) circuitry, amp designers are often forced to add additional noise reduction components to remove the unwanted artifacts introduced by all that other complex circuitry. The end result is that the musician is further and further isolated from the output; a difference analogous to driving an MG Midget versus a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado.  [Shrug] Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
